LIFEPLAN BY INSIGHTWAY / PLANNING GUIDE

How does retirement age affect my savings?

Changing retirement timing can change contribution years, the start of withdrawals and the number of years assets must support spending. Compare those effects together, including any verified pension or benefit timing.

Definitions

An accumulation phase adds contributions before retirement. A withdrawal phase uses assets to fund spending not covered by other income. Investment returns and inflation are assumptions, while benefit eligibility and payment amounts require verification with the relevant provider.

Worked example: ten versus fifteen saving years

Assume an opening investment of 100,000, a constant 4% annual return and 6,000 contributed at each year-end. After ten years the modeled asset is 220,061.07; after fifteen years it is 300,235.88. These closing balances occur at different dates and do not establish that either retirement plan is sufficient.

Formula and assumptions

Closing asset = 100,000 × 1.04^n + 6,000 × (1.04^n − 1) / 0.04, for n = 10 or 15. No fees, taxes, inflation, other assets or withdrawals are included. For a retirement phase, also model spending minus reliable income and the timing of each withdrawal.

Limitations and sensitivity

The constant return is illustrative and not guaranteed. Compare lower returns, inflation and a longer withdrawal period. Two plans with the same average return can behave differently when withdrawals coincide with losses. This guide does not calculate pension rights or recommend a withdrawal rate; verify local benefit rules and consider qualified advice.
