LIFEPLAN BY INSIGHTWAY / PLANNING GUIDE

How do major life events affect my finances?

A life event can change your income, expenses, assets and liabilities at different times. Model the separate changes, including how you fund them, before comparing the result with a baseline plan.

Definitions

Cash flow describes money received and paid during a period. Net worth is assets minus liabilities at a point in time. A transfer between your accounts changes their composition without automatically creating income or expense.

Worked example: a career break

Assume monthly take-home income of 4,000 and expenses of 3,000 before a three-month break. During the break, income is 1,000 a month and expenses remain 3,000. The break requires 6,000 from cash reserves. Relative to continuing work and saving 1,000 monthly, closing cash is 9,000 lower.

Formula and assumptions

Monthly cash change = receipts − payments. Break funding = (3,000 − 1,000) × 3 = 6,000. Baseline difference = (4,000 − 1,000) × 3 = 9,000. These are currency units, with all receipts treated as after-tax, constant expenses and no interest or other events.

Limitations and next checks

Separate the amount needed to fund an event from its opportunity cost. Add actual tax changes, benefit timing, return-to-work costs and any one-off payments. An asset purchase or new loan needs its own balance-sheet entries. Avoid recording both an account withdrawal and the same expense as two unrelated losses.
